Get Involved

The String Orchestra of Brooklyn is a volunteer ensemble built through collaboration: among musicians, composers, artists, and partners. We welcome new players throughout the year through rolling audition submissions, invite proposals for performances and interdisciplinary projects, and accept scores from composers interested in sharing their work with us.

Audition

The SOB welcomes audition submissions from musicians interested in joining the orchestra. Auditions are virtual and asynchronous, so applicants may prepare and submit their materials on their own schedule.

Auditions for the 2026–27 season are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis for all instruments through August 15, 2026. During the season, submissions are reviewed as ensemble needs arise.

Applicants should submit video recordings that include:

  1. Two required orchestral excerpts
  2. Five to ten minutes of solo repertoire or additional excerpts that demonstrate your current abilities

The second portion may be newly recorded, drawn from a recent performance, or supplied through links on a personal website.

Required String Excerpts

The SOB occasionally performs as a full orchestra. Wind and percussion audition requirements vary according to current ensemble needs; please contact auditions@thesob.org before preparing a submission.

Audition for the SOB

Collaborate

The SOB regularly works with soloists, ensembles, composers, conductors, vocalists, theater artists, dancers, visual artists, and other collaborators. We are always interested in hearing about projects that might benefit from an orchestra willing to experiment, adapt, and build something together.

To propose a collaboration, send a brief introduction, a description of the project, and any relevant links or supporting materials to eli@thesob.org.

Score Submissions

The SOB welcomes scores from living composers working in any style. We are especially interested in music that makes imaginative use of the string orchestra, expands the ensemble through additional instruments or media, or could become part of a future concert, commission, recording, or edition of String Theories.

Please send a PDF score, a recording or MIDI realization when available, and a short note introducing the work to scores@thesob.org. Links are preferred for large files. Because of the volume of submissions we receive, we may be unable to respond individually to every score, but all submissions will be reviewed.
