On February 8, the String Orchestra of Brooklyn and The American Opera Project celebrate the music of Arvo Pärt, an early entry in what will be a yearlong, worldwide celebration of his the Estonian composer’s 90th year. We begin with the composers transitional Third Symphony, a work in which he pivoted away from his earlier serialism towards a more spiritual, Renaissance-inspired musical language, but had not yet developed his pared down, minimalist “tintinnabuli” style for which he is best known. That style is represented on our program by three shorter works: Pärt’s most famous work, Fratres, featuring violinist Michael Jorgensen; the oratorio L’ábbé Agathon in an AOP-commissioned English translation sung by Sarah Moulton Faux; and ending with the mournful Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten.
